5 Creative Ways to Memorize the Bible

If you're like us, you're trying to find new ways to spend time in God's Word. Call it a New Year's Resolution or a healthy habit, but we're doing our best to incorporate Scripture reading into our daily rhythm.

Don't get us wrong...it's not always easy to prioritize. But we find our days are so much sweeter when we spend time flipping through the Bible, learning more about our God and His great plan.

Today's blog post is all about finding new, creative ways to memorize the Bible. In an effort to infuse some hope and fun into your day, we're unpacking 5 ways to learn your favorite verses and share them with friends. And yes, it's still so so important to be memorizing the Word.

1. Decorate Your Space With Scripture

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope." ~ Romans 15:13

We're easily influenced by the spaces we live in, so why not add pieces of Scripture around the house? Not only does this make it super easy for memorization, but it provides that daily dose of encouragement. Whether it's through verses scribbled on sticky notes or formal paintings, God can speak to you (and your little ones!) through them.

Your home is your safe haven. Infuse it with words of truth and remember how dearly loved and held you are by God.

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness." ~ 2 Timothy 3:6

The Bible is indeed sacred text, but it's also the living, breathing Word of God. In other words, it's not something we can't get creative with, interact with. I know at first, for me, I wasn't used to marking up my Bible. One of my friends at Bible college suggested I buy some fun highlighters and pens to make it my own—and i was shocked! A whole new world opened up to me.

Since, I've found great joy in getting creative with Scripture. You can get a journal to jot down notes from a church service or devotional, or you can even write in the margins of your Bible. There are so many options here!

3. Make Your Own Art

"Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life." ~ Jude 1:21

Paint, draw, sculpt, create! There is no wrong way to be artful with God's Word. Pick a verse from the Bible and make it your new art project. This is a beautiful and effective way to memorize Scripture and meditate on something life-giving.

Beloved author and Christian, Madeleine L'Engle, says this on the Christian artist, "The discipline of creation, be it to paint, compose, write, is an effort towards wholeness.” Everything we do should be a conscious effort to grow in Christ, to learn more about His character.

And guess what? You don't have to be a seasoned pro to create this art! You don't have to be "qualified." Follow the advice of L'Engle, "In a very real sense not one of us is qualified, but it seems that God continually chooses the most unqualified to do his work, to bear his glory. If we are qualified, we tend to think that we have done the job ourselves. If we are forced to accept our evident lack of qualification, then there's no danger that we will confuse God's work with our own, or God's glory with our own."

4. Enlist the Help of Technology

"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him." ~ 1 John 3:1

Our phones have lots of helpful uses to them. Yes, they can be enormous sources of distraction, but I believe it's all about balance.

I suggest you check some Bible memorization apps to help you on your journey. For example, the She Reads Truth and YouVersion Bible app have helpful reading plans to meditate on Scripture. Also, you can set reminders to memorize Scripture or even change your home page and lock screen to the Bible verse you're wanting to focus on.

5. Set It to Song

"Let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you." ~ Psalm 5:11

There's a reason you get those jingles stuck in your head every day...

Songs are a powerful way to memorize Scripture. Consider putting your favorite Bible verses to melody—something of your own creation! Or even enlist in the help of hymns and worship songs, as many of them already feature Bible verses. Either way, you can't go wrong.

After all, singing is such a powerful act of faithfulness. It's how we can proclaim our hope in Jesus in a dark world. Whether you're singing a joyful hymn like How Great Thou Art or a more solemn, pleading hymn like Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, there's an opportunity to meet with God.

Final Thoughts

No matter how you go about memorizing Scripture, what truly matters is that you're making time for Him—to learn, to be humbled, to hope. There is a bright, glorious future for you, LiF sister. You just need to be reminded now and then.

To close things up, I'm pointing you to yet another Madeleine L'Engle quote:

"The journey homewards. Coming home. That's what it's all about. The journey to the coming of the Kingdom. That's probably the chief difference between the Christian and the secular artistthe purpose of the work, be it story or music or painting, is to further the coming of the kingdom, to make us aware of our status as children of God, and to turn our feet toward home."
