Christian Bible Verses for Encouragement

There was once a story told of the devil and how he was liquidating all his most effective tools against believers before his retirement. The price that was placed on each tool was contingent on how effective and valuable each tool was in hampering the efforts and effective lives of believers. Well, as each price was stated, it became apparent that among all the many tools in the devil’s toolbox, the most valuable was discouragement. It was priced higher than even temptation or lust. It was the singular most effective tool the devil could use to get Christians down and to make them ineffective.

While that story is just that, a story, it is true that often as believers we are faced with discouragement and are in need of encouragement. Not only from the devil’s efforts to wreck our plans but also because life can get us down thanks to its many perils and challenges. Discouragement is a problem even for believers. However, God has not left us on our own. Instead, He has provided encouragement to us right in the midst of His word. Incidentally, it’s always ideal to turn to God and His word when facing discouragement. The following are some of the most encouraging Christian Bible verses for spiritual encouragement:

Encouraging Bible Verses

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

This passage is referring to the people of Israel, reminding them of God’s promise of protection. It is actually contrasting the fates of other lands in comparison. Even though this verse is aimed at the nation of Israel, as believers, we too are His people and can be comforted with the promises outlined in the verse.

Joshua 1:9

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

What a comforting thought! God will be with us wherever we go, no matter what we might face in our daily lives. Therefore, we can be strong and courageous. There is no need to fear or become discouraged.

Matthew 6:31–34

“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But, seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

It was once said that you should not borrow problems. In other words, don’t worry about what might happen tomorrow or any other day in the future. Instead, live out each day committed to God. Our heavenly Father knows what we need and has promised to provide.

Romans 15:13

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Hope is something that often seems unattainable during times of discouragement. God says in this verse, though, that He can give us that hope and peace through His Holy Spirit. Not only that He will give us hope but overflowing hope! What a precious promise.

Proverbs 3:5–6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

When we lean on our own understanding of what’s going on, we can easily become discouraged. Instead, we should trust in the Lord with all our heart and submit our ways to Him, to find straight paths. In other words, direction and encouragement are found through the Lord not our own efforts or understanding.

Isaiah 41:13

“For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.”

The Bible contains over 500 verses that speak on fear. This verse is just one that tells us to not fear. We are told not to fear because we have promised help in the form of a loving, all-knowing, comforting God.

1 Peter 5:6–7

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

Anxiety is so prevalent today especially now during such times of uncertainty. However, God says that under His mighty hand we will be lifted, lifted up out of our problems, away from discouragement and into peace.

John 14:27

“Peace I leave you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

What a comforting promise is outlined in this verse. My peace I give you! This message from God to believers should help anyone who is feeling discouraged or forgotten. God hasn’t left you high and dry. Instead, He is provided perfect peace that can’t be found through this world. As believers, this verse is a reminder to never look to the world for comfort as it is a false or fake comfort. Instead, we are to look to God and not let our hearts be troubled or afraid, no matter what is going on around us.
