Father's Day has arrived. For many, this holiday is a welcomed one—a chance to celebrate Dad and everything he's done for us. The patriarch of the family, the keeper of dad jokes, the strong, steady presence that encourages us when we need it most. For others, this holiday brings up a whole onslaught of emotions. Happiness, sadness, and grief, to name a few.
Our earthly fathers can differ in many ways. While many have been the loving presence we've needed, others have not. It's okay for this day to look a little different for everyone. Some may have even passed on and this holiday leaves us missing him even more. Regardless, there is a message of love Jesus wants to share with you on this day.
Father's Day is a special opportunity to celebrate, remember, and even yearn for these sacred, God-given relationships.
It's a day to honor the men in our lives and their great sacrifices for us.
We'll share a bit on how God is our heavenly father, but first, we're taking a moment to share a special Father's Day prayer in remembrance of dad.
Father's Day Prayer of Remembrance
Dear Lord,
Today I can't help but remember my father. I think of his smile, his reassuring words, his acts of service, and his love.
While he may not be here on earth anymore, I'd like to honor his life today by reflecting on everything he did. God, thank you for bringing him into my life and for the memories we shared—both the good times and the difficult times, too.
James 1:17 tells us that "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." Dad was a gift from you, Lord—a much-needed figure of love in my life. For that, I thank you.
While I miss him terribly, I know I'll be reunited with him someday. I know he's watching from heaven, smiling down on me. This prayer is one of gratitude. I thank you, Lord, for providing such a father figure in my life. I also pray you may continue to bring my family and me comfort as we miss him.
So I'll continue to honor his life in every way. I'll share his stories, reconnect with loved ones, and reflect on everything he did for me. Father's Day looks a little different this year, but I know he's having the best day of all, because he's spending Father's Day in heaven with you.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
God as Our Heavenly Father
It's true—we all experience Father's Day a little differently. We may have had an incredible dad who loved us dearly or we may have not had that at all. Whatever your experience, know you have a heavenly father who is with you today and His presence is one of peace.
A father is the one in your life who provides and protects.
That is exactly what God has done. —He Still Moves Stones
God is that loving presence we can always rely on. Our earthly relationships may have been discouraging, broken, or even painful, but the Creator of our world crafted us with a purpose and He calls you son and daughter. He is inviting you to reconciliation today. You can take heart today knowing you have a God who loves you so much, He is relentlessly pursuing you. Be sure to take some time to acknowledge our God's great love for you, whether that's in prayer or by reading Scripture.
Here are some Bible verses for you to reflect on for Father's Day:
"You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance." ~ Psalm 32:7-8
“Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.” ~ Deuteronomy 1:29-31
“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” ~ Proverbs 3:11-12
