Cultivating Peace in an Uncertain World

Cultivating Peace in an Uncertain World

How well are you protecting your peace?

The certainty of God's presence, the assurance of your deepest desires, the place in heaven for you—these are all things you must fight to acknowledge and keep at the forefront of your mind. Why? There are so many forces seeking to distract us from these sacred truths, seeking to disrupt the peace that God so freely offers to us. Between the lies of the enemy and the distractions of the world, protecting your peace is one of the greatest undertakings you'll experience in your daily life.

Consider Jesus' call to action from Philippians 4:6-7, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Our natural tendency is to reject peace and cling to our anxieties.

Of course, this is nothing new. This has been the case since The Fall in the Garden of Eden, way back in the book of Genesis.

When man turned from God and believed the voice of the serpent, relying on human knowledge instead of God's wisdom, we became separated from Him. The peace we once knew disappeared. Since then, we have forgotten our true heritage. We sin, experience shame, and often hide from God Himself, thus creating a whole new lifestyle of anxiety and dread.

However, there is a remedy to this ailment, a cure for this sin-problem we've come to know and experience so well.

Jesus is our greatest hope and assurance of ultimate peace.

"For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility." ~ Ephesians 2:14

Through Christ's life, death, and resurrection, we have been made right with God. If only we accept Him as Savior. So how do we accept this reality and allow its truth to have its way in us? How do we become those who cultivate deep inner peace?

The truth of the Gospel must be made new to us each and every day.

The key to cultivating and protecting that peace is to remind ourselves of the Gospel. We must put it before us every morning, letting its beauty wash over us and give us a fresh new perspective. Yes, we live in an uncertain world. Nothing is guaranteed to us other than Jesus' great love for us and our heavenly calling. While we exist amidst ambiguity, apathy, and darkness, we have an opportunity to live in stark contrast to the cultural norm. We have hope. This is the Gospel.

We can start our day staring at our phones, letting the fear and chaos of our world fill us with dread, or we can start the day reading our Bible, honoring Jesus' work on the cross. Instead of letting our anxious thoughts play on repeat in our minds, we can commune with God through prayer, letting His peaceful presence give us the encouragement to make it through.

"And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful." ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:16.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. In other words, continue to cultivate and protect the peace you have been promised. Don't let anyone take that away from you.

"And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord." ~ Romans 8:38-39

Our suggestions? Spend time in the Word. Listen to worship music. Journal and take inventory of your thoughts. Establish a gratitude practice. Connect with other believers.
